The life of a professional athlete always receives a wide-range of media attention. From gold medal wins to Superbowls, athletic performance is always widely publicized. But when is media coverage too much? Often the private lives of athletes are splashed across the pages of the latest gossip publication. The athlete’s featured below are just as likely to make an appearance in US Weekly as they are to be featured on the front page of Sports Illustrated.
After searching popular celebrity gossip magazines and Web sites, these ten athletes were the most common to appear.
1) Tom Brady
2) Michael Phelps
3) Brett Farve
4) Tiger Woods
5) LeBron James
6) Venus/ Serena Williams
7) Kobe Bryant
8) Tony Romo
9) Manny Ramirez
10) Alex Rodriguez
My question to you all is:
How do you feel about the personal lives of professional athletes being publicized in the media? Does the media pay too much attention to who is dating whom, or what outfit they wore to the latest movie premiere? Are there any athletes that are missing off the list?

I don't think athletes are targeted by the media nearly as much as other celebrities...which I think is a good thing. I think it's better when athletes stay out of the public eye because when something negative comes out about them--it can change a fans perspective on them on a different level which can happen with an actor/actress. But some athletes are thrown into the public eye because of who they are dating (Tom Brady, Tony Romo, A-Rod and his affair, Kobe with his whole scandal).
But if you open up US weekly, you're going to see Lauren Conrad a lot more often than you see Brett Favre. Then again athletes aren't always strolling down Rodeo Drive...
I think it's appropriate to an extent. They are the athletes who represent a team and a city, so I think it is ok to watch over them. Currently now, Adam "don't call me Pacman" Jones leaves a very sour taste for the city of Dallas so it's important the athletes realize they're being watched and represent themselves appropriately
Great topic. Love the US Weekly cover.
But where's Anna Kournikova on this list?
I just don't get why people care about how celebrities are in their personal life. I mean why should I care if Tom Cruise is retarded. I dig his movies.
The same should go for athletes. Last MLB all-star game AJ Peirzynski was beat out by Jason Varitek even though he had a better batting average, less errors, and more rbi's and homers. Buster Olney explained this by saying he wasn't nice. Why the Hell should that matter?
I totally forgot about Anna .. you're right Dave. I know that her personal life with Enrique is always a hot topic. Plus, the media will use any excuse to write about attractive female athletes.
